Hi TripAdvisor Travellers.. I want to visit Sutherlands (Northern Cape - SALT ) we are travelling some 1300km from Durban via the Garden route towards George/Knysna and then Outshoorn - How many days is needed to visit the telescopes. We were told that the best time to visit is before the raining seasons so will early August 2018 be okay. Are there any other attraction in Sutherlands

I would recommend Sterland, with Jurg as your guide for any stargazing in Sutherland. 2 nights minimum, as if the 1st night is overcast you still have a chance for the 2nd night. They do recommend winter as the best time to see the stars, but Sutherland is a winter rainfall area. You need a day to see SALT and the day tour is well worth it. Early August should be fine.
Hi - I need to plan a trip to Sutherland to do a tour of SALT - what is best way to get the most informative and interesting tour of this and star gazing - do we just book the SALT guides or what? Good accommodation recommendations needed. We would also like to combine this trip with the Spring Flowers in September - any advice on where best to go at this time and where to stay - any information welcomed! Thanks

SALT gives you a tour of the telescope hourly but you cannot see the stars from there. There are local star gazers in Sutherland however have telescopes you can see the stars with. Jurg is one of the locals. Runs a camp site at centre of town. Accommodation quite full this time of year. If you are a crowd, we stayed at starry night guest house which was very comfortable- self catering accommodation.
We will be in Surherland on 10 November. What time is the evening tour? Is it rainy season in November?
