    Can a gallstone be seen on an ultrasound?
    The ultrasound may not see the passed stone but may show a widened bile duct. Gallstones are therefore potentially dangerous in that they can cause life threatening conditions such as a blocked bile duct, inflamed pancreas, infection of the bile duct or cholangitis and an inflamed gallbladder or cholecystitis.

    The ultrasound can show some signs of infection depending on where in the pancreas the infection is located. However, this is not the exam of choice in case of suspected pancreatitis with infection. If this is the diagnostic hypothesis, the most recommended test is a contrasted abdominal CT scan. The CT scan is more objective and better visualizes all portions of the pancreas.
