The Ceiba tree (Ceiba pentandra and also known as the kapok or silk-cotton tree) is a tropical tree native to North and South America and Africa. In Central America, the ceiba had great symbolic importance to the ancient Maya, and its name in the Mayan language is Yax Che (“Green Tree” or “First Tree”).

The genus “ceiba” has 18 different species in it, but the “pentandra” is the tree usually being referred to. Mayan Mythology The Mayans knew it as Yax Che (“First Tree”). The kapok was the most sacred tree for the ancient Maya, and according to Maya mythology, it was the symbol of the universe.

The ceiba is a gigantic Tree of Life in Maya religion and cosmology and the point of beginning where the world came into existence. It grew deep into the underworld; its branches reached upwards towards the heavens and supported it. The Tree of Life, with its roots and branches, is a powerful worldwide symbol.

Mayans considered the Ceiba tree as a real-world manifestation and example of the sacred tree of life. Consequently, the Ceiba tree was usually planted in all Mayan settlements and cities. A typical Ceiba has a long, straight trunk and interestingly shelters bats in its roots.
