The grotesque, perpetually grumpy-looking blobfish has been crowned the world's ugliest animal. With its new title, the deep-sea creature will serve as the hideous public face of the U.K.-based Ugly Animal Preservation Society, an environmental group that champions "Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children."

The blobfish earned the title of “the world's ugliest animal" in 2013 after a public vote made it the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. It won based on its appearance after being brought to the surface from its natural deep-sea habitat.

In 2013, the blobfish was named the world's ugliest animal by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, winning a plurality of approximately 3,000 votes cast in an online competition.

When the Ugly Animal Preservation Society needed a new mascot, they decided to put it to public vote. The blobfish was resoundingly named as the ugliest animal alive with 795 votes of 3,000, beating the proboscis monkey, the aquatic scrotum frog, and pubic lice for the top spot ‘honour’.

The blobfish, a deepwater dweller that looks like a melted head, has won the title of Ugliest Animal Alive, by popular (human) vote. The Kakapo, a chubby flightless parrot from New Zealand made the Ugliest Animal top 5.
